A Little Book of Print Techniques

We will construct our books using gelli plates to make interesting monoprinted backgrounds, layer pattern and textures with found objects, and make foam & polystyrene stamps together with some simple image transfer to create unique artists books. Lots of demos and individual help – no experience needed – a fun experimental day with techniques you can easily do at home.

Skills and techniques that will be taught in the course:
  • Creating printing plates from foam, polystyrene and gel-plates
  • Inking and printing techniques using acrylic paints & printing mediums
  • Layering and combining processes
  • Constructing a simple concertina book

Materials
Materials are not included in the course fee. Some materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £8.00  payable to the tutor during the course. The items you will need to bring with you are listed below.

The tutor may  not have the facilities to take card payments for materials. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book 
 
Students - please bring with you:
  • Images /source material to use as starting points such as seedheads & flowers / shells & coastal stuff/ birds, butterflies, beetles / etc.  (the tutor will also have some images you can work from)
  • Acrylic paints & brushes if you have them (the tutor will have basic colours)
  • Apron, kitchen roll, mixing palette – an old plate is fine
  • Roller / brayer if you have one  (tutor will have some available to borrow)
  • Any interesting textures you might have – e.g wallpaper, bubble wrap, netting, leaves etc
  • Selection of smooth papers to work on - be prepared to experiment. (The tutor will provide white cartridge, tissue paper and zig-zag books)

We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
