Louise Arthur

I am based in the South Downs National Park near Petersfield Hampshire. I am passionate about the sustainable and creative potential of willow and hedgerow materials. I run a small business called Rough Around the Hedges that enables me to make, sell and teach all manner of basketry related crafts.
I love sharing ancient and contemporary techniques at festivals and outdoor events during the summer months and I facilitate small groups where students can be immersed in the ‘slow ’ or ‘mindful’ nature of the work. I try to let the ethics of permaculture, (Earth care, People care and Fair share) guide my work.
I am a member of the Basketmakers’ Association, Heritage Crafts Association, Hampshire Coppice Craft Group and my local British Beekeepers Association
My inspiration from the hedgerows and woodlands of my surroundings. I love the creativity of basket makers from Joe Hogan, Jo Campbell-Amsler or Ane Mette Hjornholm to the technical master
