Melanie Cambridge
I have been painting and teaching adults for over 30 years. I feel it is important to create a friendly atmosphere where everyone learns at their own pace. Plenty of demonstrations and quick studies fill my lessons making each exercise fun as well as a learning experience.
Lessons are a combination of exercises to help you learn the key skills you need to paint wet into wet with oils, mix colour with confidence and paint using a variety of brush-marks, alongside more specific lessons on how to paint skies, water, trees, figures etc.
I have written four art instruction books over recent years, all published by HarperCollins – Success with Oils, Learn to Paint Landscapes in Oils, 30 Minute Oils, You Can Paint Acrylics. APV Films also made an accompanying video to the book, Success with Oils, of the same title (also translated into French). I used to have my own range of oil paints manufactured here in the UK. This gave me an in-depth knowledge of pigments and the chemistry surrounding oil colours.
I paint mainly with oils in a loose impressionistic style. Landscapes and coastal views form the backbone of my work. Light and colour in the landscape are my key inspiration. Big skies, especially at the coast are a favourite subject. I generally paint on a larger scale in my studio, using location sketches and quick plein air studies rather than photographs as reference material.
