I’ve been working as an environmental artist working on climate change for the past 23 years. I make my work in series and I tend to work site-specifically and often outdoors. My work is about our relationship to our (natural) environment. I trained at an art school in the Netherlands based on Bauhaus principles and graduated with a five year MA after a first degree in Architecture from the UK.
My inspiration comes from independent research. I regularly work and visit museums and sometimes I will come across particularly exciting objects that form the basis of artwork. I was more recently a visiting researcher in a herbarium and I am now building my own. There are numerous artists I have found inspirational over the years as I have evolved as an artist myself. One of my heroes is herman de vries, I love the works of Pierre Soulages, Cy Twombly, Mark Rothko, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Tuttle, Sol Le Wit & Eva Hesse amongst so many twentieth century artists. I studied art history as part of my training so my list of historical artist heroes is considerably lengthier!
I aim to be relaxed in my teaching style and I want my students to enjoy themselves and to learn through doing. As a teacher I will be watching the students closely although I want to have a hands-off approach, in my view there is no right or wrong way of doing things, I will show examples and give guidance and for the students it is then personal interpretation and their choice.
