Julie Grose

I am a sculptural blacksmith and I love what I do. I use forging and fabricating techniques to create small and large works of art, or practical items, out of metal. I mainly work to commission, building projects from the conception phase all the way through to the installation.
I am keen to introduce this versatile craft to those who are interested in exploring the medium's practicality, strength and beauty.
Having studied art long before I discovered blacksmithing, my work does not reflect the artists I admire; Rothko, Klee, Beuys, Giacometti, Long, Whiteread.
My inspiration for commissioned projects comes from conversations with clients, the work's intended environment and my take on the information I'm given. I haven't drawn for 'just myself' in a long time and should probably start again!
Listening to music and walking my beautiful dog, Ruthie, who comes with me everywhere possible. Also swimming, a relaxing pastime that allows me to switch off and be weightless, the perfect balance to the heavy, grubby, grounding and physically demanding world of blacksmithing!
