Thomas Hoyer
"I started creating letters as an autodidact when I was 12 years old. Starting without guidelines had a deep impact on my life as an artist. Robert Frost described it well in his famous poem: “I took the one [road] less traveled by and that has made all the difference.” When I teach, I teach guidelines first, sure, but only until the participants have understood the principles of the topic. Then I encourage them to follow their own road.
I am inspired by people who follow(ed) their own path: Roger Dean, Hans-Joachim Burgert, graffiti artists, Peter Thornton, Yukimi Annand, Liesbet Boudens, Amity Parks, Mike Gold, Tobias Saul, Aaron Horkey. I also love comic books, martial arts, and (disco) dancing."
Thomas Hoyer has a MA in graphic design and calligraphy. As a student he worked for the Calligraphy Department of the German government. For more than 25 years now he works as a freelance calligrapher and type designer for corporate and private clients.
Influenced by the thoughts of Hans-Joachim Burgert it is his conviction that every letter bases on a definition with infinite possibilities of shape. Thomas has 30 years of teaching experience and taught his art from Moscow till Melbourne. Almost every year sample(s) of his work are selected for the Annual issue of the LAR. He is mainly known for his ruling pen mastership.
