Lin Kerr

I have two passions – art and teaching. After 30 years in adult education, I still enjoy sharing my enthusiasm about art with the people I teach. Oils are versatile and there is no right or wrong way to paint – if the results are pleasing! I encourage people to develop their own style and teach by working from observation and understanding tonal contrast.
My own work tends towards a contemporary approach to landscape where the way in which paint is applied is as important as the subject. (Yummy thick impasto applied with a palette knife alongside sensitive gentle dry-brushwork). I am currently exploring the transience of skyscapes and light. In still-life, I often take simple household objects and place them is a quiet shallow space, with a museum-like presence.
I feel that one of my strengths that I bring to any art course is the way I am able to teach people colour mixing and colour harmonising.
Career Highlights and Achievements
Four year degree in Painting and History of Art
Teachers degree in Art Teaching at college
‘Distinction’ Certificates in gilding and italic (CLAS)
I have a piece of artwork in the Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge and I have won many prizes in Lettering Arts, including international prizes. I obtained fellowships in Lettering Arts at two prestigious societies
I have written over a hundred articles for design magazines
Then I returned to my first love – oil painting and I currently write a blog about oil painting
Inspirations
I have such a variety of favourite artists, so to name a few: Morandi for his still-lifes; Turner for his skies; Gustav Klimt for his stylisation and gilding; Matisse for his pared-down cutouts. My favourite contemporary artist is Brian Rutenberg for his talent and eloquence.
Other Interests
I read (a lot), and sometimes I walk my Westie. Mostly she and the cat cuddle up while I read. I try to swim a few times a week. When my grandchildren visit I teach them photoshop, baking, book-making and art; and we have lots of fun and down-time. Fortunately my husband gardens and is a patron of art!
