Mark L'Argent
Fascinated by lettering and writing from a young age, it is something I have done all of my life. I graduated with honours in Calligraphy at the University of Surrey in 2000, and have been running a creative lettering studio ever since. This involves a variety of formal-traditional lettering styles, as well as creative contemporary lettering solutions from book jackets and film props, to calligraphy & illumination on vellum calfskin.
My own lettering artworks which I exhibit are contemporary, often with a historical reference such as gilding or written on vellum, often using words from my own creative writing compositions – but maintaining a high standard of craftsmanship.
I enjoy teaching and sharing my skills with others and run workshops both from my studio and across the UK. I have FE Teaching qualifications from City & Guilds, and my teaching style is professional, friendly, attentive, relaxed and informal, with over 25 years experience.
Early in my career I was part of a team of accomplished artists and craftspeople creating the first traditionally handwritten and illuminated bible for 500 years for St John’s Abbey in Minnesota, USA: https://saintjohnsbible.org.
Since that time, I have been privileged on many occasions to share exhibitions and gallery spaces with many talented artists and craftspeople who inspire my own work.
