Sheila Murray
I am an “exploring” artist and, having spent 30 years with Patchwork & Quilting, I felt it was time to widen my horizon to other crafts that I had yearned to try. Today, I work with mixed media, eco-dyeing, modern calligraphy and my favourite is Zentangle®. I’ve been working and teaching The Zentangle® Method, created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, for over six years. This has opened up a great many opportunities for me, especially teaching as I enjoy working with others, sharing and helping with skills that some find difficult to achieve.
I hold a FEATC Teaching Certificate and am a Certified Zentangle Teacher™. I have works exhibited at local events for community and charitable organisations, and was recently awarded The Bill Wood Memorial Shield for my work in the community, which included work with my group for Patchwork & Quilting. I am also a member of Gloucester Lettering Arts.
There are many, present day, artists which influence and inspire my work using mixed media, textural art and eco-dyeing. My inspiration is to create work that will amalgamate my artistic knowledge and methods. M.C. Escher the Dutch graphic artist. His ability to create illusion using perspective I find most inspiring. I have seen the influence of his work adapted into award winning Art Quilts.
Outside of my arts and craft work, I am also a Parish Clerk, working for two local councils serving their local community. The health and well-being of the local community is a major part of the role. I enjoy gardening and have grown vegetables for the table since I was a child. I also enjoy a game of Table Tennis and help my husband to run a “Café Ping Pong” in our community.
