Mary Noble
I discovered Calligraphy when I was a young mum, graphic design trained and looking for a new direction. I found it in adult education classes and later the tutor passed on her beginner classes to me, so I had to get advanced training to keep ahead of the students! I took on commissions and studied for extra qualifications in teaching and calligraphy so I had more to offer my classes. My own work for commissions veers towards expressive, gestural designs and I also do a lot of work with the brush. I’ve now been teaching for 30 years and still love to nurture people to develop this addictive art. Some say calligraphy is a performance art; I certainly love the actual mark-making experience, so I always include demonstrating in my teaching, alongside a step by step approach to tasks and lots of one to one help.
Career Highlights and Achievements

Inspirations
I’m currently exploring new tools cross-referencing pointed pen and pointed brush writing, and have been admiring the quality of line in pen and pencil portrait drawings of the Renaissance.
Other Interests
Classical music, rambling, reading ‘whodunnits’, and I volunteer for a local charity that offers emotional support at times of stress.
