Debbie Page
My work is handbuilt, using pinching and coiling techniques. I use a relatively small palette of glaze colours and I smoke fire much of my work, once it has been glaze fired. Influenced by Korean and Japanese pottery, I have 3 main ranges of work – spherical Jars called ‘Moon’ Jars , Pails with wooden handles based upon the Japanese water pails and small teapots. I am currently developing a range of lidded jars. I use white earthenware clay and a crank clay.
When I teach I’m really keen to pass on my enthusiasm for pottery and ceramics. I believe it’s vital to have creative outlets in life. I like to show people that with simple skills and limited experience they can make something they can be proud of and which they enjoyed making. Demonstrating is a fundamental part of my teaching process and then guiding individuals as they work.
Inspirations
My work is inspired by Korean & Japanese ceramics – both ancient & modern. I still get tingles down the spine when looking at ancient Jomon pottery from 16,000 years ago.
My favourite ceramic artists include Emily Myers, Mary Rogers and Adam Buick.
Other Interests
As well as teaching Pottery I also teach Tai Chi
