Polly Pollock
I came across basketry by accident via an interest in textiles, so strictly speaking I’m trained as a basketmaker and this is how I’ve described by practice until recently. Increasingly my work crosses backwards and forwards between the two closely related disciplines.
I work with different types of paper : paper yarns, paper strips, and assorted papers I collect e.g. paper bags, packaging etc. I’m intrigued by how versatile paper is and what I can do with it.
I’ve been teaching basketry for over 20 years in varied education environments, including on the extended 2 year basketry course at the City Lit in London.
As well as teaching several different basketry skills, I like to open a door to how amazingly interesting and diverse basketry is. Within reason I bring examples from my basketry collection helping to put techniques into context with basketry from around the world.
I am looking forward to spending an extended period of time in working in Amsterdam in early 2018, a kind of “residency”, to focus on exploring, experimenting and starting to make a new collection of work.
Inspirations
Mostly my inspiration comes through making and materials; the artist who comes to mind is Sheila Hicks’s, I especially love a lot of her small weavings which look almost like samples.
Other Interests
Travelling, riding my bike, fermenting (a new interest!)
