George Popesco

I am a practicing artist specialising in portrait and still life painting working predominately in oil paint directly from life. I strive for spontaneity in my work, bold mark making, strong tonal and colour relationships built upon accurate drawing. My teaching across the fine arts is a culmination of over twenty five years of studio experience. I have a ‘hands-on’ approach in the studio setting, guiding learning through live demonstration, small group seminars, and one to one teaching. I enjoy working with beginners and experienced artists alike, and continually update my teaching resources in response to student feedback. I have a personable and engaging communication style, both expressive and formal. My approach to teaching and learning is challenging yet supportive, tailored to individuals’ prior experiences and aspirations. Above all, my ‘classical’ academic training and professional portfolio encompass a broad range of working methods which I enjoy sharing with others.
Career Highlights and Achievements
I completed my formal Fine Art education at the Royal Academy Schools London and continued my creative practice whilst employed in main stream teaching through to Higher Education. I have exhibited widely including at the Royal Academy and National Portrait Galleries. My work is featured on the ‘BBC Your Paintings’ web page.
Inspirations
As an artist working in oils and from direct observation, I constantly seek inspiration from my immediate surroundings and those characters and personalities who attract a likeness for representation. I am influenced by the Baroque and, that period of great history painting in France, Neo Classicism and Romanticism, during and after the French Revolution, which heralded the birth of Impressionism, and later Modernism.
Other Interests
I have a general interest in history with direct links to the applied and dramatic arts along with literature and music.
