My current body of work ‘Mersea Florilegeum’ is focused on exploring flora of the salt-marsh which surrounds the coastline of the Blackwater in Essex where I live. These delicate natural forms and their fine network of roots literally ‘mesh’ together parts of our fragile coastline, reducing the destructive energy of the sea as it flows in and around them.
I create delicate ‘webs‘ of the root networks using a range of processes which I have developed over lockdown, a combination of dissolvable films and bonding/layering fibres and fabrics to create delicate webs and meshes on which plant forms are freely embroidered.
My approach to teaching is to encourage workshop participants to use the techniques and processes as a foundation, upon which you can then play, experiment and develop further with, to develop you own personalised outcome.
