Laura Walker

I am a traditional & alternative photographer from Oxfordshire. I am passionate about early Victorian photography techniques and camera-less photography. I am inspired by my local countryside as well as the countries rural background. My work changes with the seasons as I focus on floral patterns and local nature. When I do decide to use a camera, I tend to use a Seagull Medium Format camera or a Wista 5x4 field camera. I am passionate about traditional silver gelatine printing and B&W film processing.
I would describe my teaching style as ‘hand on’. To me photography is not just about the outcome of the image it’s the process/journey you take to get that print. Photography has so many senses involved with it. The feel of the film, smell of the chemicals and the most magical moment is watching your image appear from the darkness.

My favourite photographer is James Ravilious. An English photographer who spent his life documenting rural life in North Devon. His Black & White photographs capture everyday life in a rural village, working on a farm and social aspects withn the community. Not only (in my opinion) is James Ravilious a fantastic photographer but his printing skills are exceptional.
Other influences are: Sally Mann, Edward Burtynsky, Ansel Adams, John Gay, William Henry Fox Talbot, Anna Adkins & Frank Meadow Sutcliffe.
I am really interested in local history and our traditions. I like to merge these themes into my work if possible. Having said this, I am a Morris Dancer for my village side in Adderbury.
