Rachel Warrillow
I have always been fascinated by colour and pattern, remembering a childhood playing with buttons, beads and crayons. For 15 years up until the pandemic, I was working as a milliner, teaching people to make hats and fascinators. The silver lining for me, was that during lockdown I was able to take the opportunity to change direction into quilling and paper craft; and I haven’t looked back since.
I discovered the therapeutic benefits of crafting during some particularly challenging times in my life, and that’s when I knew I wanted to help spread the joy of arts and crafts to others.
I have always been described as having a ‘calming influence’, so perhaps that’s why quilling suits me so well! I like my workshops to be a relaxing experience; a time for the rest of the world to fade into the background while we focus on colour, pattern and design.
A little bit more about me
I have recently returned home to a beautiful spot in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, so I like to get out and about to explore the local area. My little rescue cat Lottie brings me so much joy, and I’m certainly a ‘mad cat lady’. I love to read and always have a fiction and non-fiction book on the go at all times.
I’ve been honoured to represent West Midlands creative businesses at the Houses of Parliament, have been interviewed on BBC Radio 2. I have also written craft tutorials for On The Couch and Mindful Crafting magazines.
Artists who inspire me
Some wonderful quilling artists have really helped bring quilling to the forefront of recent times. Artists such as Justine Kuran, Sena Runa and Yulia Brodskaya have each given quilling a new, up-to-date, modern look, all in very different ways.
