Kerri Williams
Hi, I’m Kerri - artist, designer and chief mischief maker at The Heritage Crafter. I’m obsessed with traditional decorative art, especially canal art, sign writing and fairground art. I’m a full time painter, and can often be found along our waterways, working on both historic and modern narrowboats.
I learnt my skills the traditional way, without modern short cuts, and love passing them on to others. My skills have been included on the Heritage Crafts Association Endangered List, and it’s vital they’re preserved for future generations. I see my role as not just a custodian, but as an ambassador for change, to ensure this cultural art form adapts and survives.
My teaching style is pretty laid back and fun. I focus on how people can experience decorative art, without having to purchase costly materials.
Artists who inspire me
My family are my main inspiration. My Dad could seemingly draw or make anything. My Nan worked in Walsall’s world famous leather trade, and taught me how to create patterns and designs by eye, as well as cabin lave, crochet and more. I’ll be forever grateful to them both.
My favourite artist is Sir James Thornhill who, allegedly, is a distant ancestor. I do hope so! In the world of decorative arts, I turn to Tony Lewery (Canal Art) and Fred Fowle (Fairground Art) for inspiration.
