Carry Wouters
Words and letters are the soul food of my life. Fusing idea and gesture into a visual language and experiencing the tactility of material substance or object are my daily inspiration. My years of experience as a calligraphy teacher and lettering artist, together with my curiosity and deep respect for tradition and letterform, remain my solid base to rely on when working with letters, be they manual/digital, historical or contemporary.
I’m a lettering artist and a storyteller. My personal work will always revert to authenticity, content, writing history and knowledge of materials. I like to develop letter topics to contemporary applications in the correct form translation, always “tailor-made” for student or client.
My work is mostly in private collections in Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Turkey and UK and is integrated in The Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy Moskou. I work for the corporate world and for public institutions. Publications can be found in Letter Arts Review and Scriptores magazines.
The City of Antwerp published an overview of my solo exhibition at Kasteel Sorghvliedt. I participated in larger projects such as CMXRM, Heritage Projects and Installations as well as in smaller personal collaborations.
I’m very eager in keeping the world around me challenging, looking for inspiration even in small things, learning for life. Calligraphy is only a small part of my life. Everything that is different and broader, interests me. I research to learn from and to find added value I can integrate in my personal work.
Lace making, needlework, printing techniques, books, books and libraries: it’s all part of my experience. But most of all, the magic world of words fascinates me. “A room without books is like a body without a soul” - Cicero
