Sharon Zeugin
I delight in learning and responding to the world around me in letters, lines and images. Trained as a therapist, I realized my dream of serious calligraphy study when I attended the Roehampton Institute under the tutelage of Ewan Clayton, Hazel Dolby, Margaret Daubney, and Gaynor Goffe. I have since focused on adding drawing, mixed media and graphic recording to the mix of things I do, as well as teaching across the USA, Canada, Italy and Spain. Embracing the concept of “beginner’s mind,” I teach what I want to learn.
My approach is gentle, focused on “what if?” more than ‘How to.” Creating a safe space in a classroom—whether live or on Zoom! — helps students move beyond what they think they are capable of creating. My goal as a teacher/facilitator is helping students get over the fear of the blank page while finding their personal artistic voice.
Career Highlights and Achievements
My art appears in issues of Letter Arts Review, the Calligrapher’s Engagement Calendar, The Speedball Textbook, The Art & Craft of Hand Lettering, Bound & Lettered. In addition, my art has been juried into numerous shows, locally, nationally and internationally, winning several top awards. Most recently, I won first and second place (consecutive years) in a statewide art contest, as well as a merit award in a California Calligraphy show juried by Master Calligrapher & Letter artist Carl Rohrs. I have been on the faculty of seven International Calligraphy conferences, as well as Letters California Style, Red Deer College Art Series, Ghost Ranch Literally Letters, and several other national art/calligraphy conferences. I lead sketch groups to La Romita, Italy and Spain (on the Camino). In 2016 I was selected to do a two week artist residency in Taos, New Mexico.
Inspirations
I am inspired by the inner and outer world, particularly the landscape of Northern New Mexico: Ghost Ranch and Taos. My favorite artists rage from Georgia O’Keeffe to Banksy, Anna Schuleit to Jackson Pollock; Toulouse La Trec to Turner to Andrew Wyeth (drawings). Calligraphers Brody Neuenschwander, Yves Leterme, Nancy Culmone, Suzanne Moore, Thomas Ingmire, Ewan CLayton are some of my favorites.
Other Interests
I am a drummer and dancer in the Austin Samba School, performing (until Covid) in many settings around Austin. I love music, play piano, swim almost daily, ride a tandem bike with my husband, draw, paint, create artist books, and write poetry.. I am in the last stages of writing a book: Writing For My Life, which is the first of a trilogy I hope to complete in the next couple of years. Since 2016, I host a weekly political action “Salon” in my studio—-and on Zoom.
