Enjoy designing your own exciting and colourful capital letters, which can be used to enhance your writing or be used just on their own. Have fun creating vibrant modern decorative letters or an initial, using a pencil, dip pen, line, colour, gold and silver, gouache and watercolour paint. The workshop is meant to be fun and informative! We will look at the techniques of arriving at a good and exciting letter design, use of vibrant colour with the added attraction of gold to add a sparkle and brighten the day!

- To understand the basics of Capital and Versal Letters (based on Roman Capitals)
- To create well-proportioned letterforms
- Understanding the basic of letter spacing and pattern making
- To learn how to design and decorate the letters with vibrant colour and gold

Materials

Please Bring With You
- Usual calligraphy equipment: - Calligraphy board (optional) Pens & black ink, ruler, eraser, 3M Magic tape or masking tape
- A cheap black technical pen (.3 or .5 – about £1.50 –Uniball or similar) or dip pen with a small nib
- Layout paper/ photocopy paper (preferably A3) for practising designs
- One or two pieces of Tracing paper
- 2H and HB pencils
- A small amount of good quality smooth Hot pressed 140gsm watercolour paper – one or two pieces A4 size enough for finished work
- A selection of Watercolour and Gouache paints including gold gouache or watercolour
- Two Paint brushes with good points - No. 2, plus either a 0 or 00
- Kitchen towel for wiping brushes
