Gum Arabic Transfer Printing
About Karen
Picture
Further Details:
In this workshop we will be using the humble photocopy as a printing plate! Working from high-contrast black & white images you can turn your drawings and photos into handmade prints with a quirky ‘vintage’ feel to them. Gum Arabic transfer is also great for pen & ink style drawings - working directly onto polyester-paper plates with biros and Sharpie pens we will produce a series of prints from your drawings (don’t worry – you can trace images!) using just a spoon and a bit of elbow grease to transfer the print!

There will be lots of demos, step-by-step instruction & individual help in this fun and lively workshop.

Skills and techniques that will be taught in the course:
  • Creating printing plates from photocopies and polyester plates
  • Inking and printing techniques using oil paint
  • Hand-printing methods
  • Care of plates, finishing and editioning

Levels
The course is suitable for a variety of levels including complete beginner

Materials
Materials are not included in the course fee. Some materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £6.00  payable to the tutor during the course. The items you will need to bring with you are listed below.

The tutor may  not have the facilities to take card payments for materials. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book

Students - please bring with you:
  • Photos / source material to use as starting points (the tutor will also have some images you can work from)
  • High-contrast black & white photocopies (NOT inkjet prints) approx image size A5 or smaller (the tutor will also bring some)
  • Oil paints, if you have them, in dark colours such as black, burnt umber, Prussian blue etc (the tutor will have basic colours)
  • Apron, kitchen roll, baby wipes, greaseproof paper
  • Roller /brayer if you have one  (tutor will have some available to borrow)
  • Selection of smooth papers to work on (be prepared to experiment)  - approx A4 size. The tutor will provide heavyweight white cartridge)
  • This technique also works on fabric so if you wish to bring some with you to experiment on I’d recommend closely woven medium weight cotton fabric such as calico.

We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
