Introduction to Woodblock Printing
About Beth
Picture
Further Detail
Woodcut is a versatile medium and is suited to different types of work, from precise to very expressive.  Working on Asian ply, there will also be the opportunity to sample a variety of other surfaces.  A variety of tools and papers will be available to experiment with, with plenty of information about suppliers. Working on a roughly A4 size block, it will be good to keep designs relatively simple, as wood takes longer to cut than lino.  Printing will be done with and without a press to learn the best papers to use for each technique. Water based inks with organic pigments will be used. You will be given comprehensive notes to take home with you.

Skills/Techniques Covered
  • Design- planning a successful design for the medium
  • Reference - looking at other woodcut artists and their approaches
  • Cutting - safe use of tools, experimenting with a variety of tools
  • Planning – setting up a workspace for printing, preparing papers, working to eliminate possible problems
  • Printing – inking effectively, tools and techniques for printing by hand and press

Level
This class is suitable for a range of abilities from beginner to intermediate

Materials
Materials are not included in your course fee. Some materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £7, payable to the tutor during the course.

The tutor may not have the facilities to take card payments for materials in the workshops. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book if your course involves buying materials from the tutor.

Please Bring With You
  • Pencil and rubber,
  • Paper or sketchbook
  • Apron or wear old clothes
  • Sketches, photos or ideas of the type of work you would like to make. Please don’t bring highly detailed, finished designs unless you are happy for these to be adapted for the time we have.

(Woodcut is rather different from the very fine detailed wood engraving technique)
I will bring a selection of 'rubbing' implements for hand burnishing, but you may like to bring a wooden spoon or smooth paperweight or stone, something that feels good in the hand.  Don't go to any great trouble, I will bring plenty of things to use, but if you have anything that you think might be good, do bring it.

We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
