Machine Embroidered Bowls
About Anne
Picture
Further Detail
Working with grid patterns we will use a network of stitch to make a bowl.  If you have tried free machining before then hone your skills  or if you are new to this style of work then either experiment with free machine techniques or use a straight stitch combined with automatic pattern and incorporate tiny scraps of fabric to give structure to your vessel. Once you have the structure in place, you can add more embellishment with beads, or hand stitching. No experience is necessary other than the ability to use your own sewing machine, it is suitable for both beginners and those wishing to extend their knowledge of using different materials.

Skills/Techniques Covered
  • The use of machine embroidery to make a small 3-dimensional object
  • The use of different weights of soluble fabric for different tasks
  • If you are an experienced stitcher, you could create additional 3 dimensional flowers or insects to embellish your bowl.

Level
Those with some experience in machine embroidery who wish to improve on the basics.

Materials
Materials are not included in your course fee.

Please Bring With You
  • Sewing machine, general sewing equipment. Darning foot if you want to do free machine embroidery and plate if required to cover the feed dog.
  • Soluble fabric – heavy weight such as romeo, http://www.fredaldous.co.uk/aqua-film-water-soluble-fabric-1mt-x-45cm-pack.html?gclid=CPjL0vaYr8wCFckV0wodp6oOKg  or double up finer fabric
  • Small bowl, vase etc. to use as mould, the smaller the less work to do! Consider the shape - you will be moulding the fabric over the bowl (see pictures on the product page) so nothing that tapers in and out again will work
  • Compass and scrap paper, tape measure or ruler
  • Machine Embroidery thread, other ends of threads, beads, sequins, scraps of fine fabric to trap.
  • I have a sample using raffia which you might copy using raffia or thin ribbon

We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
