This course cover the ‘next steps’ for participants who have attended Beginners Portrait or those who have taken a related course or have some existing skills, ideal for more experienced practitioners who want to expand skills. This course is designed to develop and engage a focus to your portrait painting development which instructs in the understanding of the subject through observation and lively, tactile painting techniques
Your tutor will teach approaches to the organisation of the painting palette, colour combinations and objective colour mixing. You will be taught through practical demonstration and discussion of theory. The course programme includes stages of underpainting, emphasis of expressive mark making whilst maintaining control of the oil mediums fluid and mark making qualities. Studio practice will involve experimentation of wet in wet painting, inclusive of impasto as the portrait takes a sculptural form. The model will be dressed in a way which adds narrative and revelation to their life/character.
Skills/Techniques Covered
Specific skills undertaken in the course include, a deeper understanding of the medium, proportional sighting and drawing ratio, setting a coloured ground, underpainting, primary and secondary colour coordination and mixing. Technical use of oil mediums, thinners, solvents, palette organisation and a comprehensive range of mark making possibilities with brush and palette knife.
Level
This course is designed for those that have some experience of portait painting.
Materials
Materials are not included in your course fee.
Most materials including oil colour and mediums will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £20.00 to £25.00, payable to the tutor during the course.
If you have additional tools and materials that you would like to bring then please do so.
Your tutor may not have the facilities to take card payments for materials in the workshops. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book if your course involves buying materials from the tutor.
