The aim of the course is for students to gain an in-depth understanding of the medium. You’ll learn how to design your own individual mosaic in the Roman tradition; how to cut the mosaic pieces and how to create your design using some of the classic Roman patterns that are still used today. We’ll touch upon a little mosaic history along the way, and end by grouting and finishing off your completed mosaic.

Level
This course is designed for a range of abilities, including beginners.
Materials
All materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £10 to £30 depending on how much you use, payable to the tutor during the course. The items you will need to bring with you are listed below.
The tutor may not have the facilities to take card payments for materials in the workshops. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book if your course involves buying materials from the tutor.
Please Bring With You
Optional: ideas, sketches or design references for a small mosaic – although be prepared to be flexible when working from them; design reference books will be available for use on the course.
All materials and equipment will be provided on the course, this includes mosaic pieces and base boards to apply mosaic to. However, please feel free to bring any materials you have that you might like to use, both mosaic pieces (tesserae squares to cut etc) and a base/object to apply the mosaic to. Be prepared to be flexible when using these. Please contact the tutor through the school if you would like to discuss a particular project.
We suggest that you bring an apron or you can purchase one from the school.
We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
