Further Detail
For those with little or no experience and for those who have taken a related course who would like a structured introduction to completing a self-portrait. You will be shown how to achieve a likeness and capture personality in your work. The studio environment is ideally suited for supportive discussion and shared critique. By the end of the course you will have developed your skills including line, form, colour and composition. You will also have experimented with mixed drawing media and have the practical knowledge with which to continue developing your work beyond the course.
Skills/Techniques Covered
Your tutor will teach you how to use tonal chalk drawing and oil colour pastel medium to make a direct response to the structure of the self-image. The combination of both mediums and the quality of their distinct spontaneity of making descriptive marks will be explored to fully achieve the balance of light and shade, colour and form.
Your tutor will also discuss the relevance of self-portrait in the historical context to inspire your work, and provide demonstrations and studio exercises to support you. You will start with several preliminary studies which will lead to a finished work.
Level
This course is designed for a range of abilities including complete beginners
Materials
Materials are not included in your course fee. Most materials including paper, oil pastels and chalks will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £20.00 to £25.00, payable to the tutor during the course.
We do not have the facilities to take card payments for materials in the workshops. Please remember to bring cash or your cheque book if your course involves buying materials from the tutor.
Please Bring With You
If you have additional tools and materials that you would like to bring with you please do so if you wish. You may not need to use them however – the tutor has listed all your essential needs for this particular course.
We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
