This two-day, onsite workshop is designed for those with experience of illumination through to advanced level. This is not suitable for complete beginners.

Workshop Details
A fun, creative workshop in which you can add to your gilding skills by working on a selection of small projects involving gold leaf, shell gold and coloured silver leaf.

We’ll start off by looking at the best method of laying manuscript gesso in complex shapes, with tips as to how to achieve the perfect profile and mirror shine. There will then be a choice of three small projects to work on: combining flat and raised gilding, combining different colours of gold and /or silver leaf (with the option to add tooling) and a final project using shell gold and watercolour paint. Choose the techniques which most appeal to you or have a go at them all! Pre-drawn designs will be provided but, as always, creativity is welcomed.

Skills/Techniques Covered
  • Using manuscript gesso – beyond the basics
  • Burnishing gold to a high shine
  • Tooling techniques
  • Combining raised and flat gilding
  • Advantages and disadvantages of coloured silver leaf
  • Ways of applying shell gold

Materials
Materials are not included in the booking fee. Some materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £8 -10  payable to the tutor during the workshop. The items you will need to bring with you are listed below.

Please Bring With You
  • Hot pressed watercolour paper, 140lb or heavier, 8 x A6 pieces
  • Brushes with good points – ideally 3/0 and 1, but bring what you have
  • A hard pencil (a 2H would be perfect)
  • One A4 sheet of tracing paper
  • A selection of watercolour or gouache paints
  • Kitchen towel for wiping brushes
  • Kneadable eraser and a pencil sharpener
  • A magnifying lens / optivisor if you usually need one for close work (optional)
  • Small embossing tool for tooling (optional)

We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
