This LivePlus™ online workshop is ideal for beginners and those with a little more experience.
Workshop details
This lovely festive patchwork star is the perfect introduction to the craft of template patchwork, also known as English paper piecing. An adaptable technique which, once mastered, you could easily translate into something larger - perhaps a cushion cover for example. A lovely activity as the cold, dark evenings draw in.
Template or English Paper Piecing can be traced back to the late 1700’s and became popular in the early 1800’s. It is a very therapeutic sewing technique, requiring no expensive kit - just paper templates, a small amount of fabric (off-cuts and scraps are perfect) scissors and thread.
Students will learn how to cut out their templates accurately which is key to the process, otherwise the star won’t fit together. Christine will show a few different ways of finishing the star off using ribbons, button, embroidery thread and beads to add that special detail. These stars make lovely gifts and look beautiful hanging from a Christmas tree.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
You needn't have the materials ready whilst watching the live demonstration if you don't want to stitch along. You are more than welcome to just watch, ask and learn. After the demo you will be sent a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.

All good local haberdashers should stock the items you need, and Christine would encourage you to raid your existing fabric stash or visit a charity shop to purchase fabrics.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
- Cutting templates effectively
- Cutting fabric to correct size for use with templates
- Covering templates
- Joining templates together
- Stuffing a complex shape
- Closing the stuffing hole neatly
- Embellishing with buttons, ribbons, embroidery thread, beads
Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
- You will be provided with a template ahead of the class that you will need to print off on to thick paper e.g. 120gsm
- Either a scalpel, cutting edge and cutting mat OR good quality paper cutting scissors
- Two different fabrics, could contrast or match, they don’t have to be overtly Christmassy! 100% (non-stretchy) cotton, tana lawn or shirting weight works well. (The pieces do not need to be bigger than A4 each)
- Two needles - one reasonably robust to stitch through the paper so must have a good point and one finer for stitching the templates together
- Two reels of cotton thread - one totally contrasting with fabric, one that matches
- Fabric scissors
- Stuffing
- 50cm length of ribbon
- A feature button, e.g. mother of pearl
