Workshop details
A delve into the world of abstraction – or at least a few steps in that direction!
This is a course designed to push your ideas and working methods away from realism and towards a more abstracted interpretation of your subject matter.
Each week we will look at the work of different artists as a starting point for the session. We will focus on the different elements of a painting or mixed media piece - line, colour, shape, pattern, mark-making - and then using that structure we will look at still life, landscape & natural forms.
Karen will be showing you work by some of her favourite artists – Ben Nicolson, Barbera Rae, William Scott, and Matisse as well as a number of contemporary painters - and the projects, exercises and demos will be based around their work. You will also be encouraged to seek out your own sources of reference to inspire you.
Each week has a strong practical techniques-based element and you will be encouraged to work along live as we look at creative drawing techniques to get you started, serendipitous and intentional mark-making, colour choices, constructing textural surfaces, and working with collage…. sometimes we’ll mix it all up, combine methods and materials and see what comes out the other end!
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
