Workshop details
In this workshop Janina will show you all the steps involved in making a buttonhole book with a cutaway spine. The demonstration for this workshop will be a hardback landscape A6 book, with paper cover, book cloth detailing, cutaway spine, and buttonhole stitching.
Janina will start by trimming card into the correct size for the book and will show how to make the cut away element. The front and back covers will be covered with a decorative paper, and the spine and hinge areas reinforced with bookcloth. The cover will then be placed under weight to dry flat. She will then demonstrate how to trim the inside pages to fit, nesting the folded pages into ‘signatures’. The final stage will be to sew the pages into the book cover using a long buttonhole stitch and linen thread.
All the stages will be fully demonstrated with lots of extra hints and tips along the way, and the class will be accompanied by detailed step-by-step handouts. You needn't have the materials ready whilst watching the live demonstration – the demo session is a time to watch, ask and learn. After the demo you will be sent a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop:
- Measuring and cutting grey board covers
- Making the cutaway area of the spine
- Covering the book with paper and bookcloth
- Folding and trimming paper for the inside pages (‘signatures’)
- Sewing the book together using Buttonhole stitch
- Lots of tips for painless measuring, cutting and gluing
- Advice on suitable card, papers and paper grain
Equipment & materials
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
Essential tools
- Cutting mat
- Sharp cutting knife or craft knife (not a scalpel, as this is too delicate for the greyboard)
- Metal ruler
- Scissors
- Sharp pencil
- Rubber eraser
- Blunt ended sewing needle with large eye (eg tapestry needle size 20)
- Awl or braddle (for making holes in paper and card)
- For gluing preferably a small 2” foam roller and tray. If you don’t have this then a stencil brush (circular flat ended brush)
Optional tools if you have them, and which make your life easier!
- Bone folder (for creasing paper)
- T square ruler (for getting accurate 90 degree corners)
- Paper knife / clip knife / shoe knife (for trimming down A4 paper)
Materials
- Greyboard – Janina uses 2mm greyboard from Seawhite. You could also use the back of a sketchpad
- Paper for inside pages – Janina uses 140gsm cartridge from Seawhite
- Linen thread – approx. 10 feet. Janina uses 16/3 or 18/3 thread from Hewit.
- Paper for the covers – depending on the pattern you will need at least A3 size. The softer printed Indian papers work well
- Piece of bookcloth to cover the spine – you will need approx. 25cm by 15cm.
- Waxed paper for protecting the book covers while drying – the waxed paper from inside boxes of cereal works very well
- PVA – use good quality (not too runny) – Seawhite PVA works well
- Scrap paper for gluing
