Tips, tricks and shortcuts – the easy way to do Japanese style woodcutting! We will take this ancient art and make it into something fun, accessible and simple to do. Taking our inspiration from the Provincetown Printers who developed this technique, we will carve our designs into Japanese ply creating an outline within which to print. Inking is done by hand with watercolours or gouache and produces attractive subtle prints. This is a gentle and absorbing printing technique suitable for beginners & experienced alike.
We will start with looking at what makes a suitable design for a white line woodcut, with templates for you to work from if you want to. After preparing the wood block we will transfer the design and consider methods of registration to enable you to produce a full-colour print.
A demonstration of safe cutting techniques will be followed by inking and printing using rice paste and watercolours. We will experiment with layering colour and creating ‘speckle’ to enhance our image. This is a perfect technique for printing at home requiring a minimum of space & equipment. No experience needed – lots of demos and step-by-step instruction.

You needn't have the materials ready whilst watching the live demonstration – the demo session is a time to watch, ask and learn. After the demo you will be sent a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.

Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
- Small ‘V’ gouge for woodcutting (Japanese economy cutters are good and cheap)
- Printmaking paper such as Zerkal / Fabriano Rosapina /Hosho (or smooth watercolour paper) approx. 150g - 250g (Hosho is only 85g but is a Japanese paper and very strong)
- Japanese Plywood (approx. A4 size)
- Nori Rice paste (you can make your own…a recipe will be provided)
- Barren (or wooden / dessert spoon)
- Watercolours or gouache
- A mixing palette / old plate
- Soft brushes for watercolours plus one sturdier brush for rice paste
- Masking tape
- Tracing paper or greaseproof paper
- Pencil
