Workshop details
Take Foundational Hand out of its rut of formality and make it lively, so you can have some fun with modern applications. Whilst we revere our calligraphic heritage there is so much more that we can do to make it useful and fun.
Using the classical letterforms as our starting point, Mary shall explore with you what happens when you try speeding up, using different tools and different weights for creative expression.
Starting with pencil, then monoline tools, you will first focus on the basic letterforms without the additional distraction of pen angles. Writing at speed gives a different feel, whether pencil or pen – you develop shortcuts which will then inform the stroke orders for faster, livelier writing.
When we get to using broad-edged pens those lively movements will come into their own so that we can approach a semi-formal, dynamic version with some confidence. Different tools of various thicknesses offer opportunities for drama or contrast.
With Mary's tuition you will assemble lots of starter possibilities to develop further at home.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
