ArtTalk Details
Sandro Botticelli, was an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance. His mythological work and then his touching religious paintings are among some of the most beautiful images of the period.
Botticelli's reputation declined until the late nineteenth century when his paintings were very influential on Pre-Raphaelite painting in Britain. He lived through tumultuous times, particularly in Florence during the bonfire of the vanities. His paintings on the lower walls of the Sistine Chapel and many wonderful altarpieces make his work very memorable. Although much if his earlier mythological work is lost, what we do have gives a brilliant insight into the classical stories that inspired the thinkers of his time.
This talk will use original photographs of many of the superb artworks as possible and, as always, Martin sets the art in its historical context and links it with the events that shaped the modern world. He will also provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following each talk.
The talk will last for 60 minutes, followed by an open Q&A session.
