The classes in this course have been deliberately spaced to allow for the natural growth and development of the season between sessions.
This brand new LivePlus™ online course is ideal for beginners and those with some experience. It is not a botanical drawing class; it is an opportunity to draw, colour and learn to observe the beauty of flowers.
Workshop details
Working in journals can be enchanting, it follows a long tradition. Pre-photography, travel journals were often made as a collection of watercolour books with notes. There is an element of secrecy about working like this, once dry the work is hidden between the pages of a book.
The idea of this three-part course is to capture the essence of Springtime flowers. Whether they be in your garden, your local park, or in a vase on your kitchen table, flowers are wonderful things to enjoy and the aim is to give more ways to appreciate them.
Lilian will be using pencil drawings, watercolour pencil and watercolour paints to show you how to make a personal keepsake from this beautiful season. Every session will be made up of tutor demonstrations coupled with work-along elements. You are actively encouraged to have your materials to hand for each class so that you can experiment in your journal as Lilian teaches.
Session one:
Pencil drawing, this will cover the idea of composition, shape and most of all looking closely at the subject matter. In this lesson we will all make a page/or several pages looking closely at the flowers and how these are placed on the page.
Session two:
Colour pencils, this will be a development on the first lesson and the idea is that we will make drawings, with colour added with watercolour colour pencils and pencil lines. We will also introduce water to experiment with the watercolour aspect of your coloured pencils.
Session three:
Watercolours, we will work on colour-blocking techniques to create more deeply coloured drawings. This is fun but can be messy! The idea is that we learn by doing things ourselves and there are no rules, simply techniques to be enjoyed.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
- Observation skills
- Drawing skills
- The use of watercolour pencils
- The use of watercolour as a block colour method
- Composition skills
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
- Two A5 sketchbooks (Approx. 200gsm, relatively smooth paper) - Lilian has used the Strathmore multi-media journal (160 gsm but 25% rag paper) and the 200gsm Fabriano Venezia sketchbook.
- 2B or 3B pencil
- A pencil sharpener with storage for the shavings (so your fingers don’t get dirty and mark the page when working with very white paper)
- Faber-Castell pencil eraser (I don’t recommend the use of erasers but sometimes having one is useful and knowing it is there is great back-up)
- A set of 25-30 watercolour pencils - Derwent, Faber-Castell and Caran d’ache are trusted brands
- Watercolour pan set - including lemon yellow and prussian blue. (Winsor and Newton Cotman or Schmincke are good brands. With watercolour it is always worth buying good quality ones and buying a small amount of colours rather than opting for cheap and plentiful.)
- Watercolour brushes - size 4 and size 6
