This LivePlus™ online workshop forms part of our 'back to basics' range of classes, and is specifically designed for absolute beginners and those looking to build confidence using particular materials.
Workshop details
By popular request, this two-hour beginners class will look at the fundamentals of drawing and painting with watercolour pencils.
Jonathan will show you a number of techniques, using photographs and live demonstrations, including how to mix colours, add water, how to use the brush, and which colour to put where. During the class, you will be shown how to complete one painting from start to finish, together with a number of stand-alone exercises.
Whether you want to work along with Jonathan during the class, or choose to just watch and learn, is up to you. All students will be given access to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.

Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
- A4 or ¼ imperial pad of ‘Not’ surface watercolour paper 140lb/300gsm (‘Not’ refers to the surface texture of the paper and is also known as CP (cold pressed) or Bockingford)
- A size 8 or 10 round watercolour brush
- A size 2 or 4 round watercolour brush
- Watercolour pencils in as many colours as you have. Jonathan recommends Derwent, Faber Castell, Caran D'Ache or WHSmith if buying new.
- 2B pencil
- Eraser
- Tissues
- Water container
