ArtTalk Details
George Frederic Watts was one of the very best known and prolific artists of the Victorian era. His work fell out of fashion in the twentieth century, but in recent years there has been a serious reappraisal of his unique contribution to art.
Martin examines many aspects of this fascinating artist, using original photographs from the newly refurbished Watts gallery in Compton and from other collections throughout Britain. The talk looks at the story of the artist's life and times, his sculpture, portraiture and notably his symbolic works. Watts was a great humanitarian and these qualities shine through many of his principal themes that confront the materialism of his age.
As always, Martin sets the art in its historical context and links it with the events that shaped the modern world. He will also provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following each talk.
The talk will last for 60 minutes, followed by an open Q&A session.
