This one-day, onsite workshop is designed for beginners that have a little experience and those at a more intermediate level.
Workshop Details
On this one-day, light-hearted and fun workshop you will be painting seascapes in a loose and lively way. You will be shown ways in which you can produce a variety of paintings, from wild and crashing seas to calm and colourful harbour scenes. You will learn about painting water and skies, reflections, and shadows, and how these can be rendered simply and with as little detail as possible. By using masking fluid and white gouache together with watercolour, you will be able to create convincing renditions of the sea with all its variations and subtleties of colour.
All reference material will be provided, but please feel free to bring along any images that you would like to paint from.
Skills & Techniques Covered
Materials
Materials are not included in the booking fee.
Students Please Bring
Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolours are perfectly adequate for those starting out in watercolour painting but if you want to spend a bit more money, I suggest you buy the best quality paints that you can afford and preferably in small tubes.
Among the best 'Artists Quality' paints are those made by Winsor & Newton, Schmincke, Daniel Smith, and Jackson's.
These are the colours I tend to use, but anything similar will be fine:
Good quality watercolour paper - at least 140lb, (300gsm) NOT surface - Saunders Waterford, Bockingford, Arches, Fabriano, Daler Rowney, etc. This can be in a pad, a block, or loose sheets. Any size similar to A3 or thereabouts is adequate.
Brushes
Watercolour brushes in a variety of sizes including a large brush for washes, and a square 1" or 3/4" brush. Good quality synthetic brushes are fine.
Other materials
We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
