This LivePlus™ online workshop forms part of our 'back to basics' range of classes, and is specifically designed for absolute beginners and those looking to build confidence using particular materials.
Workshop details
By popular request, this two-hour beginners class will look at the fundamentals of hand-stitched patchwork, focusing on a simple project: a patchwork ball.
This workshop is perfect for complete novices as you will be taken through the process in simple, easy to understand steps with lots of visuals. All the basic skills required for a successful template (or EPP, English pieced paper as it is sometimes known) will be covered in detail. From choosing the fabrics and threads, accurately cutting out the templates, covering the templates and joining them together, stuffing, and finishing off.
Hand-stitched patchwork is enjoying a new renaissance, just take a look at Instagram and Pinterest. It embraces recycling using scraps of fabric to make something new and original; it’s mindful, once you start stitching you are in the moment; and it’s very rewarding with a big feel good factor. It doesn’t need much space and is very transportable! Once you have made this lovely ball you will be confident to tackle something bigger…
You won't be able to complete the full project in real time, but it may still be helpful to have your materials to hand whilst watching the live demonstration. You will be provided with all the templates that you need ahead of the class and, after the workshop, you will be given a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
Links to suppliers
Christine always recommends charity shops and car boot sales as ideal places to pick up fabric scraps if you don't have anything suitable at home. Think along the lines of old cotton shirts or bed linen etc. which can often be bought for pennies.
For the sewing materials, any local haberdashery should have everything you need in stock. Alternatively, try online stockists such as Hobbycraft, Crafty Ribbons or Amazon.
