10am - 4pm
(Lunch provided 12.30 - 1.00pm)
This one-day, onsite workshop is designed for complete beginners and those with more experience
Workshop Details
Anyone can sketch, and there are many ways in which you can create an impression of what you see. Perhaps you are an artist wishing to record ideas for a painting, or just looking at ways to start a visual diary of your travels and experiences.
Channelling your thoughts and observations into a sketchbook can be very absorbing and therapeutic, and also good fun! It’s not about producing perfectly finished work for others to see, because a sketchbook can remain a private place as a record of your thoughts and personal expression. All you need is a few basic materials to start you on your journey.
There are no right or wrong ways to produce images in a sketchbook, but you will be given a variety of tips on how to go about it. Weather permitting, we may be able to spend a little time sketching outside.
Skills / Techniques Covered
Materials
Materials are not included in the booking fee
Students - please bring with you
We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.

- A good quality sketchbook in roughly A5 or A4 size. The paper should be of a weight heavy enough to take watercolour/ink. This can be spiral bound or hardback. If you really want to push the boat out you might like to buy a watercolour sketchbook. If you like to use a pen, buy paper that has an HP (hot pressed), smooth textured surface.
- 2 or 3 watercolour brushes
- A small set of watercolours
- A palette
- A couple of ordinary pencils – HB, and 4B
- A putty rubber
- A couple of black waterproof pens – sizes 0.3, and 0.5 or similar. Unipin and Edding are good makes
- Kitchen towel or tissues
- A couple of ‘bulldog’ clips or rubber bands to keep your sketchbook pages open
- A fold-up stool or chair to sit on if we are able to venture outside
- Any other of your favourite materials that you would like to bring along: coloured pencils, pens, inks, etc.
- There will also be a few materials available to borrow/purchase if you would like to try something new
We advise that you do not buy any materials required for a course more than two weeks in advance, because occasionally a course is cancelled due to low enrolment.
