Workshop details
In this beautiful series of workshops, Heather will guide you into the wonderful world of illuminated letter design. There are so many techniques to explore in this class and you will be able to continue designing letters for years to come.
These opulent letterforms combine Heather's love of brilliant, illuminated letters with a delicate Victorian style that can be used with Script lettering. The elements used to embellish the letterforms are inspired by Heather's background in offhand flourishing, floral design, and Victorian needlework.
These letterforms are carefully drawn before being transferred to your art paper. You will be encouraged to “befriend the pencil” and to keep a journal dedicated to your explorations with the Enchanted Letter. We will gild the letters with gold leaf and bring them to life with watercolours or students can choose coloured pencils or watercolour pencils.
The possibilities are endless, and we hope you find many opportunities to use them. Bring a sense of play and curiosity as we approach these forms and see what develops on the paper. All skill levels are welcome from beginner to advanced. We can’t wait to share the wonders of these letters with you. You be amazed at the results that you can achieve.
It is up to you whether you would like to work along with Heather, or simply watch and learn. After each workshop demo session you will be given a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days

Note: There are many ways to achieve similar effects in your Enchanted Letters. They can be done successfully with coloured pencils, watercolours or watercolour pencils and we would encourage you to experiment with what you have on hand. The most vibrant effects are achieved by using watercolours but we can make anything work with this process. You do not need to have the same colours or brands that Heather uses.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
- How to design your own unique letters
- How to gild with 23K gold leaf
- How to embellish letterforms with watercolour, coloured pencils & watercolour pencils
Equipment & materials list
Materials are not included in the course fee. All the materials and equipment you will need are listed below.
Drawing Stage
- Graph Paper or Gridded Journal
- Tracing Paper & Repositionable Scotch Tape with 4B pencil or Light Pad. (These are used for transferring your drawing to watercolour paper. Experienced students may opt to draw directly on their watercolour paper without these products.)
- Mechanical Pencil (any size lead)
- White Vinyl, Kneaded or Tombow Mono Zero Eraser
- Ruler
- 140 lb. Hot Press Watercolour Paper (cut down to manageable size. I will be working on 5”x7” size of 140 lb. Hot Press Watercolour Paper. You will want a few sheets of 5”x7” Paper)
Inking Stage
- McCaffery Brown Ink is recommended for the most delicate effect. A waterproof brown ink is suggested. You may also use a Copic Multiliner size 0.3 Sepia in the absence of finding waterproof ink.
- Your favourite pointed pen in your penholder. I usually use a straight holder and medium flexible pen point such as a Zebra G. (Avoid very flexible nibs for these projects.)
Gilding Stage
- One sheet of 23K gold leaf will gild several letters
- Small scissors
- Small round ball stylus
- Kohlner Miniatum Ink
- Inexpensive small brush for applying gold size or size 0 Taper Point Clay Shaper
- If you decide not to gild your letter with 23K gold leaf, you will need either a gold watercolour or any gold gouache (with mixing brush) to add gold highlights
Colour Stage

- Watercolour and/or watercolour pencils (any floral/foliage colours that you like)
- Titanium White Watercolour is very helpful for underpainting and adding highlights
- Any good quality pointed round brush will work whether synthetic or sable. I use small brushes or miniature brushes. Size 1,0 and 00 are recommend. We recommend: Isabey Series 6229 Miniatures in Sizes 2, 3 or 4 or a synthetic alternative that works well is the Rosemary and Co Series 307 size 1.
- Water dish
- Paper towel or kitchen towel
- Small china plate for mixing colours
Embellishment Stage (optional but lots of fun!)
- 2 or 3 soft pastels: Good colour choices are soft green, blue, lavender, or pink. Avoid oil pastels. (If you choose to use pastels, you will need a pastel applicator like a q-tip or eyeshadow brush and a small piece of fine sandpaper)
- Sakura Gelly Roll Pen Clear Stardust
- Size ss5 Swarovsk Flat Back Crystals
- Gem Tac Glue
- Toothpick applicator
- Any metallic watercolours
