This two-part series of LivePlus™ online workshops is suitable for students of all levels. After each workshop demo you will be sent a link to the recording, which you can watch and sketch along with as many times as you wish for thirty days.
Workshop details
This exciting and absorbing two-part series is all about how, in sketching at least, Less is More! Join Pat Southern-Pearce as she guides you through the principles of knowing what to include in your sketches, and more importantly, what to leave out. Learn the art of "not drawing every brick" - observing, simplifying, and getting lost in a love of sketching.
Sketching along with Pat will teach you how to look at things differently; spot what excites you, see what’s most important, search out the most interesting bits in a boring expanse of stone or leaves…and how to keep those bits, leave a lot of other stuff out, and still make it work.
You’ll develop confidence. You’ll start to see with new eyes. And your sketches will begin to have more breath, energy and balance as a result.
Specific skills you will learn at the workshop

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
- Learning to look for the most interesting parts of a picture, making sure you can fit these in…and setting the scene with them
- A heightened awareness of irregularities, aging, add-ons and decay in buildings, brick patterns, colour changes on gables, facades and roofs…and textural surprises
- Negative shape awareness: drawing dark spaces and shadows and not just lots of leaves to bring large areas to life and give depth. Searching out the dark spaces between fencing and clutter, hidden areas
- Learning to use “ suggestion” in a drawing and to help this, on occasions, drawing more lightly with different tools rather than using just one pen for it all
- The fun of dots in buildings and landscapes are lovely to do and give a feeling of foliage and texture with very little effort
- Working swiftly. Seeing a sketch develop
- A greater awareness of how much a wider range of tools can add to a drawing
- Working fluidly, in free expressive line using different tools
- Close, very focused observation using precise drawing, in line, for small areas
- The importance of darks for balance depth and unity, marrying these with whites and light to lift it all and add zing.
