Workshop details
Join Faith as she shows you how to create a hand sewn whitework flower in the Mountmellick style of embroidery. Using nine different stitches (including Mountmellick Stitch) you will create a textured embroidery that measures approximately 15cm x 12cm.
This type of embroidery originated in the town of Mountmellick in Ireland in the early 19th century. It uses different thicknesses of matte white cotton thread on a background of and off-white cotton sateen fabric to create contrast and texture. Historically, the technique was used for clothing as well as household products, such as tablecloths and cushions.
You will receive a template for the design and will be shown how to transfer this onto your fabric. Faith will demonstrate each of the nine stitches used to create the flower design. We will be using three different thicknesses of thread to help to create texture.
After the demo you will be given a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days. You will also receive a set of instructions which include a diagram of where each stitch and thread have been used.
Specific stitches you will learn at the workshop
