Speaker: Martin Beek
Wed 19th October 2pm - 3:15pm UK time
This talk forms part of Martin's 'Impressionism' series which takes place throughout the Autumn. This talk follows on beautifully from the Monet and Manet talks in September, and links to the Renoir talk in November.
ArtTalk details
Edgar Degas was one of the giants of the French Impressionist movement, yet his art cannot be solely defined by Impressionism. He is justifiably famous for both his pastel drawings and oil paintings, and also informal sculptural models. He was perhaps one of the finest draftsman of the late 19th century, and this talk looks at all these aspects of his career.
Martin's talk places Degas at a pivotal point in the development of French art. Degas is mainly associated with subject of dance and ballet; his drawings and paintings of this aspect of Parisian life are incomparable. He was a widely admired artist, and his modernity sprung out of a thorough classical training which he never forgot. His work is admired worldwide and is highly collectable.
Martin's talk will be illustrated by many of his own photographs and details taken from Degas' work in museums throughout the world. He will also provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk.
The talk will last for 60 minutes, followed by an open Q&A session.
