Speaker: Martin Beek
Wed 2nd November 2pm - 3:15pm UK time
This talk forms part of Martin's 'Impressionism' series which takes place throughout the Autumn. This talk follows on beautifully from the Monet and Manet talks in September and the Degas talk in October.
ArtTalk details
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, was, with Claude Monet, one of the originators of French Impressionism. His work is always full bon vivant, light and colour. Martin's talk looks at Renoir's entire career from his work apprenticeship as a porcelain painter, to his training as an artist, and salon paintings.
His best known Impressionist works, are among the most defining images of this important movement away from academicism. After a crisis of confidence, his later work reverted to earlier modes of expression and directly links him with Rubens and Watteau.
Martin also includes photographs of a number of Renoir's three dimensional work, and later works which are less well known. He is an essential figure in our understanding of late French nineteenth century art and culture.
This talk interweaves with other of Martin's talks on French painting and is fully illustrated with colourful slides and details of Renoir's work. He had a fascinating life and it is hoped that this talk will deepen our understanding of this celebrated artist.
Martin will also provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following the talk.
The talk will last for 60 minutes, followed by an open Q&A session.
