This one-day workshop is designed for complete beginners and those with some experience
Workshop Details:
Rigid heddle looms are a good choice for new weavers as setting up is straightforward and new ones are relatively inexpensive. You will be able to explore the variety of patterns that can be woven in plain weave (over one thread and under the next) as well as experimenting with textured weaves.
You will have a loom set up for balanced weave (the types used for fabrics) which you could use all day to explore some of the possibilities of textured weaves as well as using two colours for the weft. You will also be able to spend part of the day weaving on a loom threaded at about 4 threads an inch. These threads, which are the warp, will be completely covered by the weft. Patterns can be produced by using two colours in various sequences for the weft. You could also experiment with techniques for weaving scenes on this loom. The samples you create can be made up into small bags or used as mats.
The tutor will explain how to put a warp on the loom.

- basic weaving vocabulary (including “What is a heddle” and “Why are the looms called rigid heddle looms”)
- weaving with straight edges
- keeping edges neat when using two shuttles
- manipulating the warp to produce textured weaves
- finishing off weaving
