Workshop Details
Students will create a painting bursting with colour and vibrancy, capturing the bright and cheery character of a beautiful kingfisher, always a popular feathered friend to enjoy painting in watercolour. Focus on translucent and radiant qualities of the magical medium of watercolour and the effectiveness of loose and lively brushwork to give you artwork an expressive edge and lustrous colours.
Nicky will demo the stages of a painting and watercolour techniques which you will then use yourself during the day to create your own painting in a vibrant and loose watercolour style with one to one guidance and support to help your painting skills progress and loosen up your style to achieve lively lucid paintings.

You can transfer the tips, tricks and knowledge Nicky offers to many subject matters in watercolour.

Please bring your own watercolour kit which should consist of the following items

- Paint the subject matter in a vibrant and expressive style with loose and lively watercolour techniques using wet in to wet and direct painting methods.
- Understanding the importance of using a range of tone from light to dark, colour mixing guidance to help you keep the lights bright and mix effective radiant colours and intense darks to give your painting impact.
- Understanding the importance of shape and edge control to achieve soft delicate edges and stronger areas of impact and use these skills to integrate the subject matter with background effectively.

Students Please Bring
Please bring your own watercolour kit which should consist of the following items
- Watercolour paints
- Any brand is OK but academy, or student quality to be avoided
- Watercolour brushes
- A medium and large round or mop style squirrel or sable
- A small and medium pointed round brush - synthetic
- Small retailer brush
- Watercolour paper
- Rough or Not surface paper is required 140 1b weight
- I use Bockingford or Saunders Waterford brands but any good quality brand such as Fabriano or Langton is fine
- It is better to bring it stretched and ready on a board and a spare piece also
- Other items
- Waterpots, palette, drawing board, kitchen roll, pencil, rubber
- I do have items to loan for any bits and pieces missing and I have watercolour paper to purchase £ 3 per sheet so no need to buy any items or colours especially in advance.
- Colour Selection
- A Warm and a cool shade of each primary and an earth tone is good to have in any watercolour palate we will use the following.
- Lemon yellow ( cool)
- Raw Sienna ( warm)
- Cobalt blue (cool)
- ultra marine blue ( warm)
- Burnt Umber (warm)
- Cerulean blue or turquoise (warm)
- Permanent Rose ( warm)
- Dioxiadine Purple ( cool)
- Helios Purple (Sennelier - Brand) or magenta or similar cool vibrant pink shade.
- No greens required best mixed with combinations of yellow and blue.
- Nuetrals - helpful on occasion but not essential
- Lamp Black
- China White
