This LivePlus™ online workshop is suitable for everyone, but particularly those who wish to explore the use of calligraphy to develop their sketches.
Workshop details
Award-winning calligrapher Sharon Zeugin joins us online from Austin, Texas to share with us the joys of using lettering as a creative tool to add depth to our sketchbooks. The portability of blank books and a few tools allow us to record what we see, feel, think, imagine anytime, anywhere.
"Inner and outer landscapes engage my attention. Whether on canvas or journal page, I weave together text and images in a layered, organic way – whispering more than shouting, suggesting rather than telling – drawing the viewer in for a closer look." SZ
The focus of this series will be on integrating informal calligraphic scripts and handwriting with sketches to create pleasing compositions. In addition to composition and design, the class offers a variety of simple "on the go" techniques using a variety of tools & media, including pencils, fountain & parallel pens, and watercolor.
You will be working along live with Sharon on a variety of in-class exercises including handwriting, with special emphasis on gestural and contour drawing, as well as mono-line Italic printing & cursive, and informal “funky” mono-line Roman Capitals.
All levels of art experience are welcome in this class, and you don't have to know how to draw. We will work in mixed media sketch books with the option of making a simple sketchbook of class work. This class provides a way to get started (or continue) the practice of combining letters and images in a blank book.
After each class, you will be given a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for thirty days.
