This two-day workshop is designed for those with a little more experience than beginner
Workshop Details
This is a more advanced gilding class, suitable for those with some experience, concentrating solely on the use of manuscript gesso. We will make gesso in class, using a traditional recipe, and use it to create raised areas of gilding with a high shine on a small (A6 or smaller) design of your choice. Images will be available for you to trace, but creativity is welcomed. There will be plenty of gilding tips and tricks over the two days!
There is no doubt that gilding on traditional manuscript gesso, when done well, produces a mirror-like shine which survives for hundreds of years. Like any skill it takes practice to achieve perfection, but good tuition definitely speeds up the process. This is a short but comprehensive course which includes making, laying and storing gesso and using loose leaf gold. I’ll show you how to cut and lift the fragile leaf and apply it easily to your work, and how to burnish and to tool for extra effect. One of the most important elements of the class is the section on troubleshooting – what to do when things go wrong and how to fix mistakes. There is nearly always a way!
Those who are already able to make and lay gesso are welcome to work on their own projects with help and advice from the tutor.
Skills / Techniques Covered
Materials
Materials are not covered by the booking fee. Some materials will be provided by the tutor. The approximate cost of these will be £5, payable to the tutor during the workshop. The items you will need to bring with you are listed below.
