This LivePlus™ online workshop is suitable for those with some lettering experience.
Workshop details
Explore flourishes as letter embellishments and ornaments and learn the techniques used to create these expressive additions to letterforms. For every script, and every tool, there is the right technique to decorate a single letter or the whole text.
Whether you want to add a single swash or a complex texture, work with a classic or an expressive style; you’ll learn the basic rules of how to flourish, with many examples to spur your creativity, and exercises to practice techniques. We will look at the basic strokes and possible variations, as well as tools and materials. Using any script you like, participants will experiment with adding flourishes to a chosen letter or word with pencil, then follow with a nib.
In order to create more possibilities to add a flourish it is helpful to know that you can extend or alter single strokes of the script of your choice. We will explore this concept of using a classic script in a more creative way with samples of Italic and Copperplate.
During these workshops, every work along exercise will be demonstrated by Thomas and explained step-by-step, with time to then try it yourself during the class and to ask lots of questions. After each session you will be given a link to the recording, which you can watch as many times as you wish for sixty days.

Thomas will offer critique / feedback during the sessions for students taking part live, as well as via the blackboard for any work uploaded by students within thirty days of the final class ending. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.
After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard. You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.
