Thurs 23rd February 10am - 11am feedback & follow up*
(UK timings)

This LivePlus™ online workshop is suitable for beginners right through to those with some experience of making books.  You needn't have the materials ready whilst watching this online demonstration – it is a time to watch, ask and learn.

Workshop details
In this workshop Janina will show and explain all the steps to make a hard back closed spine book from scratch. The demonstration version will be A6 portrait with fabric cover and using cartridge paper for the inside pages.

She will start by trimming paper and card into the correct size for the book and nesting the trimmed sheets into ‘signatures’. The signatures will then by sewn together using traditional French link stitch, and the spine will be reinforced with glue and tissue or scrim/brown paper.

The next stage will be preparation of the covers and Janina will explain the correct size of card to cut for this size of book. The fabric will then be trimmed to size and glued to the card cover pieces. The final stage is assembly of the book, gluing the inside pages (text block) into the cover. The book is then left to dry fully.

Ideally students will make one, or preferably two, books before the follow up session, so if there have been any difficulties these can be addressed.

Specific skills you will learn at the workshop
  • Folding and trimming paper for the inside pages (‘signatures’)
  • Sewing the book together using French link stitch
  • Reinforcing the spine with wet strength tissue or scrim / brown paper
  • Measuring and cutting grey board covers
  • Covering the book with fabric.
  • Lots of tips for painless measuring, cutting and gluing
  • Advice on suitable fabric, card, papers and paper grain

All Ardington ONLINE classes and talks are accompanied by their own online blackboard. Helpful and easy to use, they enable students and tutors to share resources, ideas and photos with each other – just as you would in a classroom environment.

Janina will offer personalised feedback
for any students able to join us live during the follow up session. There is also the option to receive feedback via the blackboard for any work uploaded within thirty days of the class. You will be sent the link to access your blackboard in the week before your class begins and will have access for at least sixty days after the class ends.

After the live session has finished on Zoom, we will share the link to view the recording on the blackboard.  You can watch the recording as many times as you like for sixty days.

*The follow up session is not recorded to ensure that you have an opportunity to share your work with the rest of the class, and receive personal feedback, without feeling self-conscious about being recorded.  We would encourage you all to join us live if you can – even if you were signed up as a ‘recording only’ participant for the workshop.
